Alms Giving...what does it really mean?

Sep 22, 2013

There is a difference between tithing and giving of Alms. I really wasn't clear as to why until I was listening to Jesse Duplantis this morning.

Tithing is when you are giving your 10% to God. Alms is when you are giving in secret to another with compassion and to protect their dignity when they are facing a crisis. You keep your mouth shut and do not tell others what you have done. For when you speak of it, you will not receive compensation from the Lord for what you gave to another. You do not take from God what is rightfully his either. If you tith to the Heavenly Father, it is not something you take from your 10% that goes to Him.

Matthew 6:1-4
1. Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

Alms is NOT the same as Tithing. Alms is not given to God, it is given to your fellow man in secret and with compassion.

If there is a brother or sister in need of food, baby items, or money to pay a bill, or someone that is behind on their morgage, and you have the power to help them, do it in secret. UNLESS you are looking to receive praise from your brothers or sisters or ministry. (ie: "Look what I did!", or in general conversation, "Well I slipped a few dollars to _______ (insert name), to make sure he had the money to get to his next check." (You are sounding your trumpet to others, so therefore you are missing the reward you will receive from God by doing it in secret.) And when you give in secret you DO NOT expect it to be repaid back from the person you gave it too. If you do it in secret and with compassion it is a gift!!

Being in secret does NOT mean you take a brother or sister aside and slip him or her help. It is when your brother or sister receives help and does not KNOW who gave with COMPASSION and IN SECRET.

Proverbs 19:17
17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

Your return rate is dollar for dollar when you give in secret!!

"Praising the Lord and thanking Him for His daily word and for giving us Understanding."
